Who Told You That?

Genesis 3: 1-7 NLV

Now the snake was more able to fool others than any animal of the field which the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God say that you should not eat from any tree in the garden?” Then the woman said to the snake, “We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden. But from the tree which is in the center of the garden, God has said, ‘Do not eat from it or touch it, or you will die.’” The snake said to the woman, “No, you for sure will not die! For God knows that when you eat from it, your eyes will be opened and you will be like God, knowing good and bad.” The woman saw that the tree was good for food, and pleasing to the eyes, and could fill the desire of making one wise. So she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave some to her husband, and he ate. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew they were without clothes. So they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves clothing.

• First time that sin has entered the equation of humanity • Take note of what God did say and what He didn't say.

• We see that the serpent — which is representing Satan — leading the first human couple. Let's talk about the phrase he used.

• When he wants to lead Adam & Eve — us — away from God's best for our lives, he does not do it in obvious ways. Because if we understood what is really available to us when we walk with God in harmony; no snake would be able to slither away on his belly and lead us away from a life of God.

So instead, what does the enemy do? • He poses a question.

The devil is the master question asker. The only one that actually asks better questions than the devil, is God himself. • Let's not look all the questions we could make, but at the question that is in the text.

Genesis 3:1 NLV

Now the snake was more able to fool others than any animal of the field which the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God say that you should not eat from any tree in the garden?”

• Everything in your life that is dysfunctional is the result to this question, "Did God really say?" • The enemy has this strategy. Therefore, you cannot defeat your enemy if you don't first discern your enemy.

So the key to winning the battle for your thoughts, for your peace, for your joy, your wisdom, your family, and for all the things God has called you to enjoy — the garden of eden God has placed inside of your soul, and within the life He has called you to live. In order for you to live it, you need to understand how the enemy is working to lead you away from it.

He's crafty so he doesn't just walk up to Eve and say, "Hey! You know how awesome paradise is and how God is and you get to live for free… you have this great set-up, why don't you just go ahead and screw it all up for yourself and all of humanity?"

How can you mess up something that good? • The enemy didn't issue a direct temptation to disobedience, instead he posed a question that created a doubt that lead to disobedience.

The enemy is smart so he will not tell you to go ahead and flip off God. No! He won't tell you that. The serpent instead is hanging questions marks over God's instructions in our lives and our world.

Now, did God really say?

You can look over your life and you can see all kinds of areas where the serpent is hanging question marks because God has made promises over your life. He has spoken truth over your life. The enemy can't take those promises away, all he can do is try to put a question mark over God's promise so you will doubt God, and if he can get you to doubt God, he can lead you to disobey God, and if he can get you to disobey God, he can lead you away from the life of God. And he can do exactly what it is that he intends to do — kill, steal and destroy the purpose of God in your life, your family, your business, your spiritually, your sexuality — all because of a question.

1 Corinthians 2:11 NLV

Who can know the things about a man, except a man’s own spirit that is in him? It is the same with God. Who can understand Him except the Holy Spirit?

Could he say that about us? • Probably.. not so much. We are getting killed because we have been deceived.

WHAT QUESTION MARKS HAS THE ENEMY HAVE HANGING OVER YOUR LIFE?

Here is where God gave the original command to Adam. Look at what God says, because people tend to play the telephone game. See what God REALLY said.

Genesis 2:16 - 17 NLV

The Lord God told the man, “You are free to eat from any tree of the garden. But do not eat from the tree of learning of good and bad. For the day you eat from it you will die for sure.”

• The serpent conveniently left that part out. Now analyze with this next text,

Genesis 3:1 NLV

Now the snake was more able to fool others than any animal of the field which the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God say that you should not eat from any tree in the garden?”

• Now Eve is thinking. She has a question mark hanging over God's instructions. Correct answer is to walk away from this conversation all together. • You need to discontinue all the conversation from all the snakes in your lives.

And then, since she couldn't walk away she missed the whole point. Not only does the devil hang a question mark over God's instructions, but also over His intentions.

We have bought the lie and we've believed the line, and we've doubted God's intentions because the serpent when he went to get Eve to leave God's perfect paradise by asking, "Did God really say?" He got her to doubt that God really was good.

We try to make God a God of limitation, but the first command God ever gave was a command of liberty. • You can eat any fruit of any tree you want anywhere in this garden its good don't worry about paying me back. I made you and I love you.

God gives a command and it's a command of liberation, and the enemy turns it into a limitation. Well, the only limitation God will ever place on you is a limitation designed to protect your life, to enhance your life, to bless your life. He is good, He does good, all of His ways are perfect.

Don't you let any devil in hell put a question mark over the goodness of God in your life. • I just got laid off —*question mark* — Is God still a provider? • Get that serpent out of your heart.

Straighten that thing back up, remember all the times you thought you weren't going to make it before, well you got this far. He didn't allow you to get this far just to leave you and drop you off, He's going to carry you.

Adam and Eve were living the good life, until the enemy insinuated that God's intentions were other than good.

DID GOD REALLY SAY YOU CAN EAT ANY FRUIT? • Well no, he said we can't eat it just from this one tree. • The enemy is very crafty. He's the father of lies.

Genesis 3:3 NLV

But from the tree which is in the center of the garden, God has said, ‘Do not eat from it or touch it, or you will die.’

• You know how auto-correct on your phone can change the whole meaning of the entire sentence? Based on word, the whole context can change. There's one word — SURELY.

When God came looking for Adam, and not because He didn't know where Adam was by the way, but because Adam didn't know where Adam was anymore. Adam didn't know where God was in relation to where he was anymore.

Genesis 3:7-8 NLV

Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew they were without clothes. So they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves clothing. Then they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the evening. The man and his wife hid themselves from the Lord God among the trees of the garden.

We sew all kinds of coverings for ourselves because of the same we have experienced. Now they are ashamed and hiding, which is a bad strategy if you want to get away from God. He made this place, He knows where to look. He's everywhere. There's not a fig leaf big enough Adam. So we cover ourselves, sometimes with achievements, eating disorders… But GOd is so gracious that HE came looking for Adam

The bible tells us there are two sounds, the sound of the serpent telling lies and the sounds of Lord bringing truth. And when they heard the sound of the Lord God as He was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, they hid from Him among the trees in the garden. But the Lord called to the man.

WHERE ARE YOU? • Maybe this is a good question for you to answer today, because disobedience from God dislocates us from His love and scrambles the signal so we cannot hear His voice.

Where are you? And Adam responded.

Genesis 3:10-11 NLV

And the man said, “I heard the sound of You in the garden. I was afraid because I was without clothes. So I hid myself.” The Lord God said, “Who told you that you were without clothes? Have you eaten from the tree of which I told you not to eat?”

Who told you that? Who told you that you were naked? Who told you were never going to be a good dad because you didn't have one when growing up? Who told you that this addiction won't break away from your life? Who told you weren't going to make it?

• The devil is a liar. The voice of God is calling to His children talking about truth, redemption, freedom, light, restoration, light, healing, etc. God meets you in the place of your shame.

After the Lord confronted Adam and Eve with their sins, He told them about there would be consequences.  After God had cursed the serpent and announced the consequences, God did something very compassionate.

Geneis 3:21 NLV

And the Lord God made clothes of skins for Adam and his wife, and dressed them.

God started making some clothes and He clothed them. He could have condemned them, should have killed them, but instead He clothed them.

We no longer have to hide in His presence, we no longer have to cover our sin, but in exposing our sin to God, His grace would cover it through the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ and that tree where He died may become the tree of life that Adam lost.

Romans 5:17 NLV

The power of death was over all men because of the sin of one man, Adam. But many people will receive His loving-favor and the gift of being made right with God. They will have power in life by Jesus Christ.

• What Adam lost me, Jesus got me back — and then some!
